The Center for Independence offers community living options to best meet the needs of individuals who request this support.

The Center operates group homes throughout Pasco County. These services provide a family residential living environment for individuals with developmental disabilities in order to maintain their participation in the community after moving out of their parents’ home or a state institution. Along with succeeding on their personal goals established each year, residents share responsibilities in laundry, meal preparation, and housekeeping. Recreational and community activities are planned on evenings and weekends. Residents participate in training programs at The Center during the day, or are employed in the community.

With the help of a Supported Living coach, individuals select an affordable apartment in an appropriate location. Individuals may choose to have a roommate or to live on their own. Once the apartment is secured, arrangements are made to have telephone, power and cable television services activated. After moving, the coach assists with budgeting, bill paying, shopping, cooking, cleaning, medical appointments, medication monitoring and more, depending on the abilities of each individual. Emergency assistance is available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Individuals in Supported Living may participate in The Center’s other programs like Adult Day Training or employment services. Individuals receiving Supported Living services enjoy independence when living in their own apartments. For many of them, it is the first time in their lives that they can watch television when they choose, have meals at their own convenience, attend community activities and make new friends in the apartment complex and community.
